TOW#479 — Relax
Guys, it’s no joke, stress is really bad and it affects normal reasoning and your mood. Stress is already such a hot topic that many workshops are dedicated only to it. And yes, I think that stress has been imposed upon us as a normal way of life…
So, now that it’s already a part of our everyday lives, we need to ask what we can do to reduce or control it. When I talk about controlling it, I don’t mean that you can decide when to be under stress and when not, but more that you can control, channel and quickly remove stress once it comes…
However, since your home is your private space, I can’t really be of much help there, but at least don’t get stressed or upset at work. The way to do this is to create a relaxed/laid-back atmosphere. I know it’s easy to say and always harder to implement, but still, I’d like to share some things with you that I’ve learned from experience:
- Current situation — take a look at the current situation, think back to what you wanted to do and where you are now. So what if things didn’t go exactly as planned and you didn’t get what you expected to get? It’s not the end of the world! You’re torturing yourself for no reason!;
- Negative people — reduce the number of negative people around you, or if you’re unable to do so then reduce your communication with them;
- Take a deep breath — when stress comes, don’t start panicking and shouting immediately. Breathe in deeply, count to 10, cool down. “Yes, yes, we all know this” I hear you say, but do you actually do it in practice or end up using time pressure as an excuse?;
- Biorhythm — change your biorhythm. The current one may not be good for you since you’re easily falling into other, more stressful states, so perhaps you need a change. Get up earlier, go to bed earlier, physical activities, change your diet…;
- Work place — if you find your work station boring, reorganise. Place things on the left that used to be on the right, and vice versa… or clean everything, throw it all into the bin and start from the beginning. In addition, if you can, change places with a colleague;
- ProForma — don’t do things pro forma or just for the sake of it!;
- Responsibility — if you say or promise that you’ll do something, then be true to your word, and avoid having to explain that you didn’t mean what you said, or it was taken out of context, or I don’t know what. A lack of responsibility only makes you seem ambiguous in the eyes of others, and ambiguity can very easily lead you to stressful situations.
- Promises — be careful what you promise, because promises can also sometimes lead you towards stressful situations.
- Open communication — have more frequent informal meet-ups with colleagues, get to know each other, ease your cooperation with them — you need each other and your work atmosphere will be more relaxed. And if a stressful situation arises, it’ll be easier for you all to deal with it quickly.
A relaxed atmosphere at work makes us all more productive, which automatically means that productivity increases for the whole company…
Wishing you success with the changes to come,
