TOW#486 — Impression
There’s no second chance to make a first impression! — Yes, I know you know this saying and it’s been said a million times, but it’s only really true in certain situations… I have the feeling that precisely because of this saying we sometimes don’t try to make an impression in our current position or to give our best. Perhaps it’s not even the saying’s fault, but us who have become lazy, totally consumed by this apathy that surrounds us.
It doesn’t matter what the reason is, but when it comes to leaving an impression, you really should! That you need to improve your performance, you really should! That you need to impress in your current position, you should! And don’t do it for someone else, but for yourself!
I can give you some tips on how to do this at work, and I’m sure you’ll also find some ideas in there than you can implement in your daily life:
- Do what you agreed to do! — if you’ve already confirmed that you’ll do something, don’t sabotage it later. You’re sabotaging yourself!
- Lying — always speak the truth, no matter how much it hurts. Lies won’t get you very far!
- Be better every day — not worse! — your improvements will be noticed by those that you hope are watching, whereas your deterioration will be noticed by everybody!
- Arrive earlier at work or for meetings — believe me, it’s very important for the person or people waiting for you. Everyone appreciates it!
- Clothes — it may be subconscious, but people who are dressed well make a better impression than others. Of course, in some places there are codes that you should adhere to, but be sure to always be neat and clean.
- Computer — in today’s era, your availability needs to be 24/7. That’s the only way to give off the impression that you’re someone that can be reached at any time, and, knowing this, people will value it and won’t bother you unless it’s necessary.
- Home and work — the problems you have at home, stay at home, and vice versa! Don’t use your time at work to resolve your domestic issues!
- Positive — we all have problems, but try to remain positive!
- Staying late — if you really need to, stay a bit longer at work. You’re not staying for the company, but for yourself!
- Be in the know — some people are so limited that they want to work only on what they know, but you must have knowledge on and interest in the whole industry in which you work, and even more than that.
- Proactive — yes, I know we’ve said it hundreds of times, but it’s true!
- Criticism — learn to listen to criticism and to take it as something positive! There are some people around you that wish you well and their “criticism” is well intentioned!
- Assumptions — don’t make them, because they’re usually taking you in the wrong direction! Ask questions!
You’ll always have a second and more chances to make an impression, and it depends on you and you alone whether you’ll use it! Just please don’t blame anyone else for it if you don’t.
Wishing you success with the changes to come,
