TOW#499 — You only live once

I’m going to be short and direct in this week’s tip.

The “You only live once” concept isn’t right. You only die once, but you live throughout your life (someone clever said this). And how we live influences our habits, those in turn influence our character, which then shapes our destiny.

I’m sure that you’ve either heard or said the phrase many times. It sounds nice as a life philosophy / concept, but unfortunately we seem to use it only in situations when we want to do something that we’re not quite sure is good (something crazy, risky, unjustified, immoral, hedonistic, ‘stupid’), and by hiding behind the motto of “you only live once” we comfort our brain and give it a rational justification… and then we do the thing.

It’s very difficult to live properly and to be guided by true values and the rules of life. We’re heavily influenced by our surroundings, the system, various flavours, forbidden fruits, traps and temptations. Since it’s very hard to control all these things, we say “you only live once” to relieve our brains of guilt after we’ve done the ‘forbidden’ thing. This is because, as we know, the brain always justifies its actions rationally and logically, regardless of whether they’re good or not.

The next time you want to do something ‘mental’, try not to use this concept as a way to justify it. Go ahead and do it, as an experiment or purely for self-gratification, but be aware of the situation, your actions, and of what’s happening to you, and be ready to face the consequences.

Wishing you success with the changes to come,
