Tip of the Week is a collection of texts written by various authors, dealing with everyday topics, that can help you to make improvements in both your personal and professional life. New tips are sent out every single Thursday, and you can comment on them at: www.facebook.com/tipoftheweekPriracnik. A selection of the first 100 tips have been published as handbooks on personal and professional development.

I believe many of you will agree with me that when it comes to the young working population nowadays, whether it be reading, online education, consultation, university or attending various work conferences, it’s absolutely crucial to invest in new knowledge, both for ourselves and for our colleagues and teams, because in that way we directly improve the results in the workplace.

For me, attending different conferences, either as participant or speaker, is the most valuable form of learning, drawing on new knowledge and trends, because learning allows for socialising and fun, and thus the whole experience of education is different.

Whenever you go to a conference (or workshop, lecture) I suggest you ask yourselves what drove you to sign up and participate(?). Some of you go because you’ve been ‘made to’ by your boss, but I nevertheless sincerely hope that for most of you the main motivation is to learn something new. And it’s precisely through this desire to learn something new that we consciously or unconsciously express the need for change, that is, the desire to improve (or challenge) our current situation.

Will that change, driven by learning, push the boundaries of our thinking thus far, as well as our views and positions on various processes, strategies, and our work in general — YES it will! It’s a challenge and not exactly an easy one, but that’s what it’s like outside the comfort zone, which is why we attend conferences, lectures and workshops in the first place. To be better! To be the best!

I’d like to suggest a little ‘homework’ for the next conference or lecture you attend. Remember at least two ideas, two individuals, two suggestions or new concepts of the many you hear, see or feel and which make you say to yourself “I want that too, I want to be like that, I want to work that way!”

Write down the two most striking ideas and ‘take them with you’ into your daily life, into the workplace. Those two ideas, those two concepts are exactly what will make you better, or the best at what you do.

Make the most of every conference, every lecture, every workshop, every networking event you attend. Remember both the successful and less successful stories and lectures, because there’s no better way to learn than from practical examples. Get to know people, socialize, connect, and I’m sure that among the multitude of new ideas, tools, strategies and concepts, you’ll find those two that will improve you, both professionally and personally!

Knowledge is power — enjoy learning every day of your life!
