TOW#528 — Impossible/hopeless situation
I’m sure that like me you’ve also found yourselves in impossible/hopeless situations on a few occasions, and the questions I always ask myself are: is this situation really that bad or do I just think it is, and what in fact is a hopeless situation?!
So, for starters, let me answer the latter question: what is a situation from which there’s no way out? According to the little bit of research I did, every ‘impossible’ situation is connected with the brain and the signals that it’s sending. It’s all down to the brain and how it’s behaving at that moment and what it wants to tell us, thus you believe that your situation is beyond all possible optimism, that it’s impossible and/or that you’re incapable of solving or improving it. You then begin to believe that nothing can change the situation, so you don’t do anything to change it, and since you’re doing nothing, nothing changes, and you end up proving to yourself that you were right.
It’s not a state of depression, but the dejection you feel in those moments is so great that many people associate it with depression.
Seeing as everything revolves around the brain, and that you can’t work like that, here are some tips on how to get out of that kind of situation and do something good for yourself (above all) and the company you work for:
Focus — the lack of focus in such moments is the biggest problem, or in other words the fact that we’re so focused on the situation we find ourselves in. Try to focus on other things. Start with things that are easily achievable, and work your way up.
Work/Action — don’t just sit around and moan about being in the situation. Do something, take action, but don’t just do it because I or someone else told you to do so, but actually complete each thing. Let your brain concentrate on other things, and not on the state that you’re in.
Education — read up on the things you’re currently working on, but I also suggest you expand your views and start learning something else that could complement what you’re working on, or is something completely different which you always wanted to learn and apply in your professional life.
Past vs Future — forget the past, focus on the future. Learn from mistakes and don’t allow them to be repeated, if you’re not already into the habit of learning from others’ mistakes.
Colleagues — improve (daily) communication with your colleagues. Help them to complete their tasks, because in that way you’ll both help yourselves (work, action, redirecting focus, etc) and also maybe one day they’ll also help you out (this shouldn’t be your primary objective though).
The most important thing is to know that there’s a way out of everything, and therefore out of every situation. Now, the problem is that sometimes the way out, or the solution to that situation may not be to our liking (at least not at first), but as the old saying goes — every bad thing leads to something good!
