TOW#575 — Summation
The last day of the year is the day for final preparations for the craziest night, but you should also be preparing to summarise the results you’ve achieved over the past year.
YES, summarising the results, i.e. checking whether you managed to achieve what you set out to do during the year (we already wrote about this), or not, and if NOT then why not and what could you have done better in order to reach your goal.
You can do these summaries for yourself (for home and work), for the family, for the company, the sector, the team, and so on.
There are two ways to summarise results: qualitative and quantitative.
1. Quantitative ones are those that are more focused on the financial aspect of success in achieving the plans you set out for the year/period. If we’re talking about a company, then it’s simple — you just need to ask your financial department (internal or external) to do a review and you’ll see how things stand. And no, here I don’t mean whether you ended the year positively (the best way) or negatively, but whether you achieved what you set out to do financially. If you achieved it, even if you’re in the minus, the benefits will come next year so there’s no need to panic!
2. Qualitative ones are a little more abstract, and are more focused on whether the targets you set for the past year have been achieved overall. Some questions that can help you to properly summarise qualitative results are:
- What did we learn in 2020?
- What are my (our) achievements?
- How did they affect our growth?
- What were my (our) biggest disappointments?
- Did we implement a strategy to turn around or constructively resolve the disappointments?
But the most important thing, at least for this year, is to be realistic while you’re being self-critical. Don’t dwell only on the negative things (as in, Covid means it was a disaster), but instead be objective and take your analysis a bit deeper. Since we’re already talking about Covid, it affected the whole world, not only you, so we don’t really need to analyse it at all.
Dear readers, this is the last Tip of the Week for 2020. The team here at Macedonia-Export, as well as I personally, wish you much health and happiness in 2021, and I hope it brings you much better results than last year.
Happy holidays,
