TOW#615 — Whatever

Tip of the week
2 min readOct 14, 2021

The trigger for this tip came a few days ago, in a conversation with my son, when he answered me with “Whatever, I don’t care!” It was the thousandth time I’ve heard it lately.

Yes, I do believe that this whole situation we find ourselves in is maybe a reason for that word to be used more often than usual, and maybe you really don’t care (many things are new to us, many things have changed, many things…), but that doesn’t mean we should truly not care!

When you don’t care, that’s where apathy creeps in… lifelessness…

And the worst thing is that I’m hearing it at work, as well as things like “you get what you paid for”, “I don’t care, I did my part!”, “I don’t care if they shout at me, or accuse me or not.”

‘Whatever’ leads to:

- Poor performance — you just do things mechanically, automatically, which doesn’t speak well of you and doesn’t help you progress, because after each completed task (regardless of whether it’s done well or badly), we’re supposed to learn and thus be better prepared for the next challenge.

- Disintegration of the team — you don’t care about the team, its performance, and you allow the whole team to perform badly together with you, also risking possible disciplinary action for poor performance.

- Disintegration of the collective — you know, if the company where you work goes bust, then you’ll have to look for income elsewhere, and we know how difficult it is to find a new job nowadays. You can’t not care about how the company’s doing, because that’s like not caring about how things are at home!

So, just be aware that just because something doesn’t matter to you, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter to those that are close or not so close to you.

When you don’t care, it has consequences for you (both professionally and personally), but also for the whole environment around you.

It’s the easiest thing in the world to say I don’t care, but go do something so that you do care! There are a million ways to get out of that negative whirlpool of ‘whatever’:

- Change job or job position

- Change your approach and the way you do things, be proactive

- Find a hobby (even at work) that interests you a lot, to motivate you.

Guys, it does matter!
